Finding Little Blue

Citizen Science Penguin Project

Penguin chicks saved!

Last week DOC was called to a residential site in Mokau, where a little blue penguin nest had been found with an adult and two young chicks. The site where the penguins had made their home, was under the flooring of a bach which was being demolished. Fortunately, the owner agreed to leave the floor intact until the chicks had fledged and the nest was vacated.

If you or anyone you know has a bach or house right on the coast, keep an eye and ear out for signs of little blue penguins.  Also, if anyone is planning on demolishing a building near a beach or estuary, please double check under the floors / foundations that there are no nesting penguins.
